Genetics of Type 1 Diabetes Development and Immunotherapy Response

Melanie Shapiro, PhD

Principal Investigator

Dr. Shapiro earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Cell Biology & Molecular Genetics from the University of Maryland and PhD in Immunology & Microbiology from the University of Florida under the guidance of Dr. Todd Brusko and Dr. Mark Atkinson. Her PhD work was focused on serum biomarkers to predict T1D and elucidating the function of a candidate gene in T1D pathogenesis. Dr. Shapiro’s postdoctoral work focused on the use of precision medicine genotyping microarray data to investigate the role of T1D risk loci in promoting immune phenotypes associated with T1D pathogenesis and loci modulating individual response to therapeutics for suspension and/or prevention of T1D development.
